I arrived at Bramble Root bright and early in the morning, just as Delphine had told me to do. Luckily, Aunt Matilda had a full schedule. She was in the barn with a client when I left, and Ghost was still asleep, so I didn’t have to make up a story about where I was going. I left a note on the kitchen table simply saying I had a few things to do and would be back later.

Scarlet greeted me cheerfully and lavished me with praise. “You have certainly proven that you’re worthy of joining our coven. It’s just a shame that Chief Casanova got out unscathed. Other than that, though, yesterday was a huge success. There’s no doubt the town will take all future threats of ours seriously.”

“Will there be others?” I asked, hoping Scarlet might fill me in on their plans, and she didn’t disappoint.

“Oh, yes. See that crystal,” she said, walking over to a table by a large picture window, “I just brought it inside. I left it out all night under the full moon to super charge. Once I set its intension, it’ll be ready to be used.”

The large clear quartz sparkled in the sunlight. Crystals were powerful tools, and it was essential to care for them properly if you wanted to benefit from them. My curiosity was definitely piqued. “And what intension is that?” I asked.

“There’s an important person in town that we need on our side. This stone will help accomplish that, and then the sky’s the limit. We will control Fiddlehead Creek.” Her voice rose with excitement, and a wry smile twisted her face.

I shuddered inwardly, knowing she must be referring to the mayor. Once the coven had him under their spell, it would be near impossible to stop them from their evil deeds. I needed to do something soon, or it might be too late. “Delphine had asked me to stop by this morning because she thought you might have some questions about the bombing.”

“Yes. Yes, I do, actually. Poor thing. She’s under the weather. Apparently, she took quite a fall. Strange that there aren’t any lumps or bruising, don’t you think?” Scarlet’s demeanor had changed. A sudden thin chill hung on the edge of her words, and I knew I had to answer carefully.

“She’s lucky to have landed on the grass and was only unconscious for a short time. I think it was the sound of the explosion as well as the impact that has affected her.”

Scarlet cocked a brow. “But you’re okay?”

“Aside from some ringing in my ears.”

“Well, I’m happy to hear that and glad that you both got out in time. That was a worry of mine. No matter how careful you are, things can go wrong.”

“I hope Delphine feels better soon.”

“I’ll tell her you said that, and I’ll be in touch soon with a time and date for your induction into the coven.”

“Thank you. I’m looking forward to it.” I left Bramble Root glad to have been dismissed so quickly.
